Cancer Sarcoma is a type of cancer that arises from transformed cells of mesenchymal origin.

Sarcomas are classified into two major categories: bone sarcomas and soft tissue sarcomas. They are relatively rare compared to other cancer types.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Osteosarcoma
  • Chondrosarcoma
  • Ewing's sarcoma
  • Liposarcoma
  • Leiomyosarcoma
  • Rhabdomyosarcoma

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Initial Evaluation:

History and Physical Examination: A thorough medical history and physical examination to identify symptoms and risk factors.

Imaging Studies: X-rays, MRI, CT scans, and PET scans to visualize the tumor.

2. Biopsy: A biopsy is performed to obtain a tissue sample for histopathological examination. This can be done through:

Needle Biopsy: Using a needle to extract a tissue sample.

Surgical Biopsy: Removing a small part of the tumor surgically.

3. Diagnosis:

Pathology Report: Analysis of the biopsy sample to confirm the type of sarcoma and its grade (aggressiveness).

4. Staging: Determining the extent of the disease using imaging studies and possibly additional biopsies to check for metastasis (spread to other parts of the body).

5. Treatment Plan:

Surgery: The primary treatment for localized sarcoma, aiming to remove the tumor completely with clear margins.

Radiation Therapy: Used before surgery to shrink the tumor or after surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells.

Chemotherapy: Often used for high-grade sarcomas, certain types like Ewing's sarcoma, or metastatic disease.

Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy: Used in specific cases based on genetic markers and the tumor's molecular profile.

6. Follow-Up: Regular follow-up visits with imaging and physical examinations to monitor for recurrence or metastasis. Rehabilitation and supportive care to manage side effects and improve quality of life.
