Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops from the thin layer of tissue that covers many of the internal organs

The most common area affected is the lining of the lungs and chest wall, but it can also occur in the lining of the abdomen, heart, and testicles. Mesothelioma is primarily caused by exposure to asbestos fibers, often occurring in workplaces where asbestos was used in the past. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, chest pain, weight loss, and abdominal swelling.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Pleural Mesothelioma
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma
  • Pericardial Mesothelioma

Following are the procedure steps:

Diagnosis: Mesothelioma diagnosis usually begins with a thorough medical history review and physical examination. Diagnostic tests may include imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, or PET scans to visualize the affected areas. Additionally, a biopsy is often necessary to confirm the presence of mesothelioma cells. The biopsy can be obtained through various methods, including fine needle aspiration, thoracoscopy, laparoscopy, or surgical biopsy.

Staging: Staging helps determine the extent of the cancer spread and guides treatment decisions. Mesothelioma staging often involves imaging tests, such as CT scans and PET scans, as well as biopsies to evaluate lymph nodes and distant organ involvement. The staging system commonly used for mesothelioma is the TNM system, which assesses the tumor size, lymph node involvement, and metastasis.

Treatment Planning: Once the diagnosis and staging are complete, a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, and other specialists, collaborates to develop a personalized treatment plan. The treatment plan depends on several factors, including the type and stage of mesothelioma, the patient's overall health, and their preferences.

1. Surgery:

Surgical options may include cytoreductive surgery, pleurectomy/decortication (for pleural mesothelioma), peritonectomy (for peritoneal mesothelioma), or pericardiectomy (for pericardial mesothelioma).

2. Chemotherapy:

Chemotherapy drugs, either alone or in combination, are commonly used to shrink tumors, relieve symptoms, and potentially improve survival rates.

3. Radiation Therapy:

Radiation therapy may be used to target and kill cancer cells, particularly after surgery or as palliative treatment to alleviate symptoms.

4. Immunotherapy:

Immunotherapy drugs work by enhancing the body's immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells. While still in the experimental stage for mesothelioma, immunotherapy shows promise as a treatment option.

Supportive Care: Alongside active treatment, supportive care is essential to manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and address the physical and emotional needs of patients. Supportive care may include pain management, nutritional support, physical therapy, counseling, and palliative care.

Monitoring and Follow-Up: After completing the initial treatment, patients undergo regular follow-up appointments to monitor their condition, assess treatment response, manage side effects, and address any new symptoms or concerns. Imaging tests and other diagnostic procedures may be performed periodically to evaluate disease progression or recurrence.
