Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) is an advanced form of radiation therapy used to treat cancer.

VMAT is a type of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) that administers radiation in a single or multiple arcs around the patient.

Unlike traditional radiation therapy, which delivers radiation from a few fixed angles, VMAT continuously adjusts the intensity and shape of the radiation beam as the machine rotates around the patient.

Cancer treatment, specifically a form of external beam radiation therapy.

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Planning:

Imaging: A CT, MRI, or PET scan is conducted to visualize the tumor and surrounding structures.

Treatment Planning: Using specialized software, a treatment plan is developed to determine the optimal angles, dose distribution, and beam intensity.

2. Simulation: The patient is positioned on the treatment table, and immobilization devices are used to ensure consistent positioning for each session. A simulation scan may be performed to verify the treatment plan and ensure accurate delivery.

3. Treatment:

Setup: The patient is positioned on the treatment table using the immobilization devices.

Delivery: The linear accelerator (LINAC) rotates around the patient, delivering radiation from various angles. The machine continuously adjusts the beam's intensity and shape, allowing for precise targeting of the tumor while sparing healthy tissues.

Monitoring: The treatment team monitors the patient and the machine to ensure accurate delivery. Imaging may be used to verify the patient's position and make adjustments if necessary.

4. Post-Treatment: The patient is monitored for side effects and response to treatment. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to assess the effectiveness of the therapy and manage any side effects.
