Throat cancer refers to cancerous tumors that develop in the throat (pharynx), voice box (larynx), or tonsils.

Throat cancer occurs when cells in the throat or larynx undergo genetic mutations that cause them to grow uncontrollably. Factors contributing to these mutations include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and exposure to certain chemicals.

Symptoms of throat cancer can include a persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, a lump in the neck, and unexplained weight loss.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • Adenocarcinoma
  • Sarcoma

Following are the procedure steps:

Diagnosis:

1. Physical Examination: Initial assessment of symptoms and medical history.

2. Endoscopy: Using a thin, flexible tube with a camera to examine the throat and larynx.

3. Biopsy: Removing a small tissue sample for laboratory analysis to confirm the presence of cancer cells.

4. Imaging Tests: CT scans, MRI, PET scans, or X-rays to determine the extent and location of the cancer.

Treatment

1. Surgery: Removing the tumor and possibly some surrounding tissue. Types of surgery include:

Endoscopic Surgery: Using an endoscope to remove small tumors.

Laryngectomy: Partial or total removal of the larynx.

Pharyngectomy: Removal of part of the pharynx.

2. Radiation Therapy: Using high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells. Often used in combination with surgery or as the primary treatment for early-stage cancer.

3. Chemotherapy: Using drugs to kill cancer cells, often used in combination with radiation therapy.

4. Targeted Therapy: Using drugs to target specific molecules involved in cancer cell growth.

5. Immunotherapy: Boosting the body’s immune system to fight cancer cells.
