Cancer radiotherapy, also known as radiation therapy, is a medical treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.

Radiotherapy can be used as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. It can be applied externally using external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) or internally through brachytherapy.

Here are some common types as below:

  • External Beam Radiation Therapy
  • Brachytherapy
  • Systemic Radiotherapy

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Consultation and Planning: Initial consultation with a radiation oncologist to determine the type of radiotherapy. Imaging tests (CT, MRI, PET scans) to locate the tumor and plan treatment. Creating a custom treatment plan based on the type, location, and stage of the cancer.

2. Simulation: A simulation session to map the treatment area. Marking the skin or creating immobilization devices to ensure the patient stays in the same position during each treatment.

3. Treatment Delivery:

EBRT: Patients lie on a treatment table while a machine delivers radiation. Sessions are usually daily, 5 days a week, for several weeks.

Brachytherapy: Placement of radioactive material inside the body for a specific period, which can be temporary or permanent.

Systemic Radiotherapy: Administration of radioactive drugs orally or intravenously.

4. Post-Treatment Care: Regular follow-up appointments to monitor the patient’s response to treatment and manage any side effects. Supportive care to address side effects such as fatigue, skin irritation, and other potential complications.
