Cancer proton therapy is a type of radiation treatment that uses protons instead of X-rays to treat cancer.

Proton therapy is designed to target tumors more precisely than traditional radiation therapy. The unique physical properties of protons allow the radiation oncologist to deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumor while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues and organs.

A form of radiation therapy that uses protons (positively charged particles) to irradiate diseased tissue, most often in the treatment of cancer.

Radiation Therapy: Proton therapy falls under the category of radiation therapy but is distinguished by the type of particles used (protons vs. photons in conventional X-ray therapy).

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Consultation and Planning: The patient undergoes a consultation with a radiation oncologist. Imaging studies (CT, MRI, or PET scans) are performed to determine the size, shape, and location of the tumor. A customized treatment plan is created using advanced computer software to map out the precise delivery of proton beams.

2. Simulation: The patient is positioned on a treatment table in the exact manner they will be during actual treatments. Molds or masks may be created to help the patient stay still during therapy. Additional imaging is taken to ensure precise targeting.

3. Treatment Delivery: During each treatment session, the patient is positioned on the treatment table. Proton beams are generated by a particle accelerator and directed to the tumor through a nozzle. The proton beams are delivered in a series of fractions (individual treatment sessions) over several weeks. Each session typically lasts 15-30 minutes, although the actual time the protons are being delivered is only a few minutes.

4. Monitoring and Adjustment: Throughout the treatment course, the patient is regularly monitored for side effects and response to therapy. Adjustments to the treatment plan may be made based on follow-up imaging and the patient's condition.

5. Post-Treatment Care: After completing the treatment course, the patient undergoes follow-up appointments to monitor for any late side effects and to assess the effectiveness of the therapy. Long-term follow-up includes regular imaging and consultations with the oncologist to ensure the cancer remains in remission.
