Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception.

Vasectomy

During a vasectomy, the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, are cut, sealed, or otherwise obstructed. This prevents the release of sperm during ejaculation and effectively makes a man sterile.

The two main types of vasectomy procedures are:

  • Conventional Vasectomy
  • No-Scalpel Vasectomy

The procedure typically involves the following steps:

Preparation: Before the procedure, the patient may be asked to shave the scrotum and surrounding area to maintain cleanliness. The patient may be given a mild sedative or local anesthesia to numb the area and help relax during the procedure.

Positioning: The patient lies on their back on an examination table with the genital area exposed.

Cleaning the Scrotum: The scrotum and surrounding area are cleaned and sterilized to reduce the risk of infection.

Local Anesthesia: A local anesthetic is administered to numb the scrotum, ensuring the patient does not feel pain during the procedure.

Isolation of Vas Deferens: The healthcare provider locates the vas deferens, which are the tubes carrying sperm from the testicles to the urethra. The vas deferens are isolated from the surrounding tissues.

Incision or Puncture (Depends on Method): For a conventional vasectomy, a small incision is made on each side of the scrotum to access the vas deferens. For a no-scalpel vasectomy, a special instrument is used to puncture the skin of the scrotum without the need for incisions.

Cutting or Blocking the Vas Deferens: The vas deferens are cut, and a segment may be removed. The cut ends are then sealed, tied, or cauterized to prevent the passage of sperm.

Closure: If incisions were made, they are closed with stitches or surgical glue.

Recovery: The patient is observed for a short period to ensure there are no immediate complications. The patient is usually able to go home shortly after the procedure.

Follow-Up: The patient is advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities for a few days. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to check for proper healing and confirm the absence of sperm in subsequent ejaculate samples.
