A hydrocele is a medical condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the sac that surrounds the testicle.
Hydroceles are more common in newborns, often resolving on their own without treatment. However, they can also affect adult males and may be associated with other conditions such as inflammation or injury.
The two main types are:
Here are the main procedures used for managing hydroceles:
Observation: Small, asymptomatic hydroceles, especially in infants, may be observed without immediate intervention. In many cases, congenital hydroceles in infants tend to resolve on their own during the first year of life.
Aspiration (Needle Aspiration or Aspiration with Sclerotherapy): A healthcare professional may use a needle to aspirate or drain the fluid from the hydrocele. This is a less invasive procedure, but it often has a higher recurrence rate compared to surgical options.
Sometimes, a sclerosing agent (a substance that causes scarring) may be injected after aspiration to prevent the fluid from re-accumulating.
Hydrocelectomy (Surgery): Surgical removal of the hydrocele sac is a more definitive treatment for hydroceles. This procedure is known as a hydrocelectomy and can be performed as an outpatient surgery. There are different surgical techniques, including:
a. Open Hydrocelectomy: In this procedure, a small incision is made in the scrotum, and the hydrocele sac is either removed or partially removed. The remaining edges are then stitched together.
b. Endoscopic Hydrocelectomy: This is a minimally invasive procedure where a tiny camera (endoscope) is used to guide the surgeon in making small incisions. The hydrocele sac is then removed or treated with the endoscope.
c. Lord's Procedure: This is a modification of the open hydrocelectomy where the hydrocele sac is everted (turned inside out) and then sutured to reduce the risk of recurrence.
