Laser stapedotomy is a surgical procedure used to treat otosclerosis, a condition that affects the stapes bone in the middle ear, leading to hearing loss.

The procedure involves creating an opening in the stapes bone and replacing it with a prosthetic device, which helps restore sound conduction to the inner ear.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Conventional Stapedotomy
  • Laser Stapedotomy
  • Stapedectomy

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Preoperative Assessment: The patient undergoes audiometric testing and imaging studies to confirm the diagnosis and plan the surgery.

2. Anesthesia: The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's needs and the surgeon's preference.

3. Accessing the Middle Ear: The surgeon makes an incision in the ear canal and carefully retracts the ear drum (tympanic membrane) to access the stapes bone.

4. Laser Application: The laser is used to create a small opening in the footplate of the stapes. This requires precision to avoid damaging adjacent structures.

5. Inserting the Prosthesis: After creating the opening, a small prosthesis (often made of titanium or other biocompatible materials) is inserted into the stapedotomy site to connect the eardrum and the inner ear.

6. Closure: The tympanic membrane is repositioned, and the ear canal incision is closed.

7. Postoperative Care: Patients are monitored for any complications, such as infection or changes in hearing. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to assess recovery and hearing improvement.
