Submucous diathermy is a surgical technique that involves the application of high-frequency electrical currents to tissue beneath the mucosal surface.

Submucous diathermy is a medical procedure used primarily in ENT (ear, nose, and throat) practice, especially for the treatment of certain conditions affecting the nasal mucosa, such as hypertrophied turbinates, chronic rhinitis, and sometimes for adenoid hypertrophy.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Radiofrequency Turbinate Reduction
  • Adenoid Reduction
  • Other Mucosal Procedures

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Preparation: The patient is usually under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient's needs.

2. Access: The surgeon accesses the nasal cavity through the nostrils, ensuring minimal external incision.

3. Application: A diathermy probe is inserted through the mucosa to deliver controlled radiofrequency energy to the underlying tissue.

The depth and duration of energy application are carefully controlled to avoid damage to surrounding structures.

4. Monitoring: Throughout the procedure, the surgeon monitors the tissue response and adjusts the energy application as needed.

5. Closure: Once the procedure is complete, the mucosa is left to heal naturally. No sutures are typically required.

6. Recovery: Patients may experience some swelling and discomfort post-procedure, but recovery is usually quick, and most can resume normal activities within a few days.
