Thyroplasty is a surgical technique designed to modify the position or shape of the thyroid cartilage to improve vocal cord function and voice quality.

Thyroplasty is a surgical procedure performed on the thyroid cartilage of the larynx (voice box) to improve voice quality, particularly in patients with vocal cord paralysis or other voice disorders. During thyroplasty, the surgeon typically makes an incision in the neck and exposes the thyroid cartilage.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Type I Thyroplasty
  • Type II Thyroplasty
  • Type III Thyroplasty
  • Type IV Thyroplasty

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Anesthesia: The patient is typically placed under general anesthesia.

2. Incision: A horizontal incision is made in the neck to access the thyroid cartilage.

3. Exposure of the Thyroid Cartilage: The surgeon carefully exposes the thyroid cartilage to assess the vocal cords.

4. Implantation: Depending on the type of thyroplasty, the surgeon may insert an implant or adjust the vocal cords to achieve the desired position.

5. Closure: The incision is closed with sutures, and the patient is monitored during recovery.
