LAUP (Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty) is a surgical procedure aimed at treating obstructive sleep apnea and snoring.

LAUP is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a laser to remove excess tissue from the throat, specifically the uvula and parts of the soft palate, to widen the airway and reduce or eliminate snoring and sleep apnea symptoms.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Traditional LAUP
  • Radiofrequency Ablation
  • Combination Procedures

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Preoperative Evaluation: Patients undergo a thorough evaluation, including a sleep study to assess the severity of sleep apnea.

2. Anesthesia: The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, with sedation if needed.

3. Laser Application: The surgeon uses a laser to remove small portions of the uvula and soft palate. This may involve multiple laser applications to achieve the desired results.

4. Recovery: Patients typically experience some discomfort, which can be managed with pain relief. Recovery can take about a week, with instructions to avoid irritants like smoking or spicy foods.

5. Follow-up: Follow-up visits are necessary to monitor healing and evaluate the effectiveness of the procedure.
