Hearing screening tests in the field of Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) are essential for identifying individuals who may have hearing loss or are at risk for developing hearing issues.

A quick, non-invasive assessment designed to identify individuals with potential hearing loss. It serves as an initial step before conducting more comprehensive audiometric testing.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Pure Tone Audiometry
  • Otoacoustic Emissions
  • Auditory Brainstem Response
  • Tympanometry

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Preparation: Ensure a quiet environment to minimize background noise.

Explain the procedure to the patient, ensuring they understand the purpose and what to expect.

2. Testing:

Pure Tone Audiometry: The patient wears headphones and listens to a series of tones at varying frequencies and volumes. The patient indicates when they hear a sound (e.g., by raising a hand or pressing a button).

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs): A small probe is placed in the ear canal, and sounds are played to measure the cochlea's response.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR): Electrodes are placed on the scalp, and sounds are presented through earphones to monitor brain activity in response to sounds.

Tympanometry: A probe is inserted into the ear canal, which changes air pressure and measures how well the eardrum moves.

3. Interpretation: Results are analyzed to determine if hearing loss is present and to what degree.

Based on results, recommendations for further testing or intervention may be made.
