A meniscectomy is a surgical procedure in which a portion or the entire meniscus, a C-shaped cartilage structure in the knee joint, is removed.
Meniscectomies are typically performed to address problems with the meniscus, such as tears or damage. In some cases, only the damaged or torn part of the meniscus is removed, while in other cases, the entire meniscus may need to be removed.
There are two main types of meniscectomy procedures:
General overview of the steps involved in a typical arthroscopic meniscectomy are:
Preparation: The patient is positioned on the operating table, and anesthesia is administered to ensure the patient is comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
Incision: The surgeon makes small incisions around the knee joint, typically two or three, to access the interior of the joint.
Arthroscopic Inspection: An arthroscope, a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light source, is inserted through one of the incisions.
This allows the surgeon to visualize the inside of the knee joint on a monitor.
Evaluation and Assessment: The surgeon evaluates the meniscus to determine the extent of the tear, its location, and whether a partial or total meniscectomy is necessary.
Meniscal Tissue Removal: Specialized instruments are introduced through the other incisions. The surgeon trims or removes the damaged portion of the meniscus, depending on the type and severity of the tear.
Smoothing and Shaping: The remaining edges of the meniscus are often smoothed and shaped to create a stable surface and reduce the risk of future complications.
Closure: The instruments are removed, and the incisions are closed with sutures or small adhesive strips. In many cases, no stitches are required for the skin incisions.
Postoperative Care: The patient is monitored in the recovery room and may be given instructions for postoperative care, including exercises, pain management, and follow-up appointments.
