Cervical fusion is a surgical procedure in which two or more vertebrae in the cervical spine are joined together to create a solid, immobile mass of bone.
This fusion is typically done to address various spinal conditions, such as degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or fractures.
Here are some common types of cervical fusion:
Below is a general overview of the steps involved in a common cervical fusion procedure:
Preparation: The patient is positioned on the operating table, typically lying on their back. Anesthesia is administered to ensure the patient is comfortable and does not feel pain during the procedure.
Incision: In ACDF, the surgeon makes an incision on the front side of the neck (anterior approach). The specific location of the incision depends on the affected vertebrae. Tissues and muscles are gently moved aside to access the cervical spine.
Discectomy: The intervertebral disc(s) between the affected vertebrae are removed. This is known as discectomy and is done to relieve pressure on nerves, spinal cord, or address other spinal issues. Bone Graft Placement: A bone graft is inserted into the empty disc space. The bone graft can be sourced from the patient's own hip (autograft), a donor (allograft), or it may be a synthetic material.
Instrumentation: Metal plates and screws may be used to stabilize the vertebrae and promote fusion. The instrumentation provides additional support during the healing process.
Closure: The incision is closed with sutures or staples. A sterile dressing is applied to the surgical site.
Recovery Room: The patient is moved to the recovery room for monitoring as they wake up from anesthesia. Vital signs are closely monitored.
