Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at repairing the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and the structures of the middle ear.

Tympanoplasty is defined as a surgical operation to reconstruct the tympanic membrane and the middle ear structures to restore normal hearing and prevent complications.

Here are some common types as below:

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Preoperative Preparation: Patients typically undergo a thorough evaluation, including hearing tests and imaging studies. They may also receive instructions for fasting and stopping certain medications.

2. Anesthesia: The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, though local anesthesia may be used in some cases.

3. Surgical Technique:

Access: The surgeon may access the middle ear through the ear canal (transcanal approach) or via an incision behind the ear (postauricular approach).

Repair: The tympanic membrane is repaired using graft material, which can be taken from the patient's own tissue (often from the temporalis fascia) or synthetic materials. If there is damage to the ossicular chain, reconstruction may be performed using prosthetic devices or autologous bone.

Closure: Once the repair is complete, the surgical site is closed, and the ear canal is often packed with sterile material.

4. Postoperative Care: Patients may need to avoid water in the ear, and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor healing and assess hearing improvement.

5. Recovery: The recovery time varies, but patients typically resume normal activities within a few weeks. Hearing improvement may take time as the ear heals.
