A cochlear implant is an electronic device that bypasses damaged hair cells in the inner ear (cochlea) and directly stimulates the auditory nerve.

A cochlear implant is a medical device designed to provide a sense of sound to individuals with severe to profound hearing loss who do not benefit sufficiently from traditional hearing aids.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Single vs. Bilateral
  • Electrode Arrays
  • Manufacturer

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Pre-operative Assessment: This includes hearing tests, medical evaluations, and counseling to ensure the patient is a suitable candidate for a cochlear implant.

2. Surgery:

Anesthesia: The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia.

Incision: A small incision is made behind the ear to access the mastoid bone and cochlea.

Implantation: The receiver is placed in a pocket created in the skull, and the electrode array is inserted into the cochlea.

Closure: The incision is closed with sutures.

3. Post-operative Care: Patients usually stay in the hospital for a day or two for monitoring. Pain management and care instructions are provided.

4. Activation and Rehabilitation: The external device is activated a few weeks after surgery, allowing the patient to start experiencing sounds.

Speech therapy and auditory rehabilitation may be necessary to help the patient adapt to hearing through the implant.
