FESS is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis and other sinus-related conditions.

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a surgical technique that uses an endoscope to visualize and access the sinus cavities, allowing for the removal of blockages and diseased tissue. The goal of FESS is to restore normal drainage and function of the sinuses.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Complete FESS
  • Selective FESS
  • Modified FESS

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Preoperative Assessment: Patients undergo a thorough evaluation, including imaging studies (CT scans) and a review of symptoms and medical history.

2. Anesthesia: The patient is placed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the complexity of the case and patient preference.

3. Endoscopic Examination: The surgeon inserts the endoscope into the nasal cavity to assess the sinuses.

4. Surgical Intervention: Removal of polyps, cysts, or other obstructions.

Opening the natural drainage pathways of the sinuses (meatotomy).

If necessary, procedures like balloon sinuplasty may be performed to expand the sinus openings.

5. Postoperative Care: Patients are monitored in recovery and may receive instructions on nasal care, medications, and follow-up appointments. Nasal saline irrigations are often recommended to help with healing.
