Retinoblastoma is a rare type of eye cancer that typically develops in early childhood, usually before the age of five.

Retinoblastoma arises from the immature cells of the retina and can occur in both hereditary and non-hereditary forms. The hereditary form is often bilateral (affecting both eyes) and is associated with a genetic mutation in the RB1 gene. The non-hereditary form usually affects only one eye.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Unilateral Retinoblastoma
  • Bilateral Retinoblastoma
  • Trilateral Retinoblastoma

Following are the procedure steps:

Chemotherapy: To shrink the tumor. Can be systemic (whole body) or localized (intra-arterial or intravitreal).

Cryotherapy: Uses extreme cold to destroy small tumors.

Laser Therapy (Photocoagulation): Uses laser light to destroy blood vessels feeding the tumor.

Radiation Therapy:

1. External beam radiation

2. Brachytherapy (internal radiation)

Surgery:

1. Enucleation: Removal of the eye, used in severe cases where the tumor is large or vision cannot be preserved.

2. Focal therapies: Direct treatment to the tumor within the eye.
