Aesthetic laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure that uses concentrated laser energy to improve the appearance of the skin by reducing wrinkles, scars, and blemishes, and promoting smoother, more even-toned skin.

Laser skin resurfacing works by directing short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin. It precisely removes skin layer by layer. The laser beam used in this treatment will remove the outer layer of your skin, called the epidermis, and heat the underlying skin, called the dermis. This action stimulates the growth of new collagen fibers, which helps the new skin to be smoother and firmer.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Ablative Laser Resurfacing
  • Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Consultation: Initial consultation with a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon to assess skin type, medical history, and treatment goals.

2. Preparation: Skin may need pretreatment with topical retinoids or bleaching agents for several weeks prior. Avoid sun exposure and stop certain medications that can affect blood clotting.

3. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia or sedation may be administered to minimize discomfort.

4. Laser Treatment: The laser device is moved over the treatment area, delivering precise pulses of light. For ablative lasers, the outer layers of skin are removed. For non-ablative lasers, the laser heats the dermis without removing the outer layer.

5. Post-Procedure Care: Skin is cooled and a protective ointment or dressing is applied. Patients receive specific aftercare instructions, including using moisturizers, avoiding sun exposure, and possibly taking prescribed medications to prevent infection and manage pain.

6. Recovery: Ablative procedures typically require 1-2 weeks of recovery with redness and swelling. Non-ablative procedures have minimal downtime, with slight redness and swelling for a few days.

7. Follow-Up: Regular follow-up appointments to monitor healing and results. Additional treatments may be required for optimal results, especially with non-ablative lasers.
