Aesthetic dermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that involves the controlled surgical scraping or sanding of the skin to improve its appearance. It aims to treat imperfections such as scars, wrinkles, and pigmentation issues by removing the outer layers of the skin to promote the regeneration of new, smoother skin.

Dermabrasion is typically performed by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. The procedure uses a high-speed rotating instrument with an abrasive surface to exfoliate the skin. This process removes the damaged outer layers, allowing new skin to grow in its place. The depth of the abrasion can be adjusted depending on the specific skin condition being treated.

Aesthetic dermabrasion is classified as a minimally invasive cosmetic surgery. It can be performed on various areas of the body but is most commonly used on the face. It is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning it does not require an overnight hospital stay.

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Consultation: The patient consults with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to determine if they are a suitable candidate for dermabrasion. Medical history, skin type, and specific skin concerns are evaluated.

2. Preparation: The treatment area is cleaned and marked. The patient may be given a local anesthetic to numb the area. In some cases, a sedative or general anesthesia may be used, especially for extensive procedures.

3. Dermabrasion: The healthcare provider uses a high-speed rotary instrument with a diamond fraise or wire brush to gently and precisely exfoliate the top layers of the skin.

The depth of the abrasion is controlled to ensure even treatment and to minimize the risk of scarring.

4. Post-Procedure Care: The treated area is covered with a sterile dressing. The patient is given specific aftercare instructions, which may include using prescribed ointments, avoiding sun exposure, and keeping the skin clean. The skin will appear red and swollen immediately after the procedure. It may also ooze or form a crust as it heals.

5. Healing and Results: The initial healing period typically lasts about 7-10 days, during which the new skin forms. Complete healing and the final results may take several weeks to months. The patient should follow up with their healthcare provider to monitor the healing process and address any concerns.
