An aesthetic chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to exfoliate and remove the top layers, revealing smoother, more youthful skin underneath. This procedure aims to improve the appearance of the skin by reducing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and other skin irregularities.

Chemical peels can vary in strength, categorized as superficial, medium, or deep, depending on the type and concentration of the chemicals used. The choice of peel is determined by the patient's skin type, concerns, and desired outcomes. Commonly used chemicals include alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and phenol. The procedure is typically performed on the face, but it can also be applied to the neck, hands, and other areas.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Superficial Peels
  • Medium Peels
  • Deep Peels

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Consultation: A thorough consultation with a licensed dermatologist or aesthetician to determine the appropriate type of peel based on skin type and goals. The patient's medical history and any contraindications are also reviewed.

2. Preparation: The skin is cleansed to remove any oils and impurities. In some cases, pretreatment with topical agents may be recommended to prepare the skin and improve peel results.

3. Application: The chemical solution is carefully applied to the skin using a brush, cotton pad, or gauze. The solution is left on for a specified period, during which the patient may experience a tingling or burning sensation.

4. Neutralization (if needed): For certain types of peels, a neutralizing solution may be applied to stop the chemical reaction. This step is typically not needed for deeper peels as they neutralize naturally over time.

5. Post-Treatment Care: After the peel, the skin is soothed with a cooling agent or mask. Patients are given detailed post-care instructions, including the use of moisturizers, sunscreens, and avoiding sun exposure. The recovery time and specific aftercare steps vary depending on the peel's depth.
