An imaging ultrasound scan, also known simply as ultrasound or sonography, is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the body's internal structures, such as organs, tissues, and blood flow.

Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation, making it safer for certain applications, including pregnancy imaging.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Abdominal Ultrasound
  • Pelvic Ultrasound
  • Obstetric Ultrasound
  • Cardiac Ultrasound
  • Doppler Ultrasound
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
  • Transvaginal and Transrectal Ultrasounds
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound

Following are the procedure steps:

Preparation: Depending on the type of ultrasound, the patient may be asked to fast or drink water to fill the bladder. The patient will be positioned either lying down or sitting on an examination table.

Application of Gel: A water-based gel is applied to the area being examined. This gel eliminates air between the skin and the transducer to improve sound wave transmission.

Using the Transducer: A transducer, which emits high-frequency sound waves, is placed on the skin over the target area.

The transducer sends sound waves into the body, and these waves bounce back (echo) when they encounter different tissues or structures. The reflected waves are converted into images by the ultrasound machine.

Real-Time Image Capture: The operator, typically a sonographer or radiologist, moves the transducer over the area to obtain various angles and views. The images are displayed in real-time on a monitor, allowing for dynamic assessment.

Completion and Analysis: After the scan, the sonographer or radiologist will remove the gel, and the patient can typically leave without any recovery time needed. A radiologist will analyze the images and provide a report to the referring physician.
