Anesthesia Neuro refers to the specialized practice of administering anesthesia to patients undergoing neurological surgeries or procedures.

Neuroanesthesia involves meticulous planning and execution to cater to the unique needs of neurological patients. This includes managing intracranial pressure, maintaining cerebral perfusion, and ensuring rapid emergence from anesthesia to facilitate immediate postoperative neurological assessments. Neuroanesthesiologists work closely with neurosurgeons to tailor the anesthesia plan according to the specific procedure and patient's condition.

Here are some common types as below:

  • General Anesthesia
  • Regional Anesthesia
  • Sedation

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Preoperative Assessment: Comprehensive medical history and physical examination.

Review of neurological status, imaging studies, and laboratory results.

Discussion of anesthesia plan with the patient and obtaining informed consent.

2. Preparation: Ensure availability of necessary monitoring equipment (e.g., EEG, ICP monitors).

Prepare anesthetic agents and equipment for airway management.

Intravenous access placement and administration of premedication if needed.

3. Induction of Anesthesia: Administer induction agents (e.g., propofol, thiopental).

Secure airway via endotracheal intubation or other methods.

Initiate mechanical ventilation if required.

4. Maintenance of Anesthesia: Use of inhalational agents (e.g., sevoflurane) or intravenous agents (e.g., propofol).

Continuous monitoring of vital signs, brain activity (EEG), and intracranial pressure.

Administration of additional medications as needed (e.g., muscle relaxants, opioids).

5. Emergence: Gradual reduction of anesthetic agents towards the end of the procedure.

Reversal of muscle relaxants if used.

Extubation and transfer to post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) for recovery and monitoring.

6. Postoperative Care: Continuous monitoring of neurological status.

Pain management and prevention of complications (e.g., nausea, vomiting).

Close communication with the neurosurgical team for ongoing patient care.
