A chronic, relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking, continued use despite harmful consequences, and long-lasting changes in the brain.

Drug addiction involves a physical and psychological dependence on substances, leading to significant impairments in health, social relationships, and daily functioning.

It often starts with voluntary drug use, but over time, the ability to choose not to use the drug becomes compromised. This is largely due to changes in brain function, particularly in areas involved in reward, motivation, learning, and memory.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Opioids
  • Stimulants
  • Depressants
  • Hallucinogens
  • Cannabinoids
  • Inhalants

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Assessment: Comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional to understand the extent of the addiction, including medical history, mental health status, and social factors.

2. Detoxification: Medically supervised detox to manage withdrawal symptoms safely. This phase helps to clear the substance from the body but does not address the underlying addiction.

3. Rehabilitation: Inpatient or outpatient programs that provide intensive therapy, counseling, and support to help individuals understand their addiction and develop strategies for maintaining sobriety.

4. Medication: Use of medications to manage withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, or treat co-occurring mental health disorders. Examples include methadone or buprenorphine for opioid addiction and naltrexone for alcohol dependence.

5. Behavioral Therapy: Various forms of therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and contingency management, to address the psychological aspects of addiction and promote behavioral changes.

6. Support Groups: Participation in support groups like Narcotics Anonymous (NA) or Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) to receive peer support and accountability.

7. Aftercare: Ongoing support and treatment, including regular therapy sessions, support group meetings, and, if necessary, additional medical treatment to prevent relapse and maintain recovery.
