Gynecomastia surgery is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting gynecomastia, a condition where males develop excess breast tissue due to hormonal imbalances, genetics, certain medications, or other underlying causes.

Gynecomastia is commonly characterized by the enlargement of male breast tissue due to an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. This condition can affect one or both breasts and is typically benign but may cause discomfort, social anxiety, and body image issues.

Here are some common types as below:

  • Liposuction
  • Excision
  • Combined Liposuction and Excision

Following are the procedure steps:

1. Preoperative Assessment: Medical history review and examination to determine the extent of gynecomastia.

Imaging and hormone tests to exclude malignancy or serious endocrine disorders.

Discussion about the desired outcome, risks, and surgical plan.

2. Anesthesia: Surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the extent of the procedure.

3. Incision: For liposuction, small incisions are made in discreet areas for inserting the cannula.

For excision, the incision is usually made around the areola or along the natural contour of the chest.

4. Tissue Removal: Liposuction removes excess fatty tissue.

Excision involves the direct removal of glandular tissue and sometimes skin.

If a combination technique is used, the surgeon first performs liposuction, then excises remaining glandular tissue.

5. Closing the Incisions: Incisions are sutured and dressings are applied to the surgical site.

A compression garment may be placed on the chest to minimize swelling and support healing.

6. Postoperative Care: Recovery typically involves wearing a compression garment for several weeks.

Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for a few weeks.

Mild to moderate swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common in the first few days post-surgery.

7. Follow-up: Patients are monitored for any complications, such as infection, hematoma, or scarring.

Endocrinologists may continue to manage any underlying hormonal imbalances to prevent recurrence.
